In light of the recent disaster brought about by typhoon Sendong (International name “Washi”) in the Northern Mindanao region of the Philippines, Paramount Life & General Insurance Corporation (PLGIC) organized a special team of its employees to spearhead the company’s relief efforts in aiding the disaster victims of Cagayan de Oro (CDO).
“This Christmas season, all of us will be celebrating the season with countless blessings. Let us make this celebration more meaningful by being a blessing to others as well,” was the short email appeal of Roseller Ditangco, Paramount’s AVP for Marketing, that galvanized the entire company to contribute to OPERATION TULONG, the company’s fund raising effort to purchase blankets, slippers, food and medicines for the typhoon Sendong victims.
Guided by the spirit of sharing and giving, OPERATION TULONG received cash donations from all Paramount branches, officers, employees, shareholders and directors. Within two days, over P200,000 was raised; enough to purchase much needed supplies to immediately deploy and bring relief to the residents of typhoon-affected areas in Cagayan de Oro.
PLGIC’s special team headed by Art Penascoza –Branch Manager for CDO & Ms. Emily Cadutdut - CDO Branch Cashier in coordination with local area officials led by Brgy. Kagawad Derby Pacudan went to Brgy. Consolacion, Cagayan de Oro last December 28, 2011 to personally distribute the relief goods. Among the items greatly needed by these communities that were distributed during the relief operations were blankets, slippers, noodles, sardines and biscuits. Local officials estimated that around 1,000 people were at the relief operation conducted by PLGIC and that each person represented one household that was hit by typhoon Sendong.
After giving out relief items to the residents of the barangay Consolacion, PLGIC proceeded to also give out extra blankets to employees of several companies located within the vicinity that were also affected by the calamity. The team donated 20 blankets to Ford – CDO, 12 to Maybank, and 50 to Graphics All Store. According to Ms. Cadutdut and other members of Team Paramount, the experience of being of help to others was truly fulfilling.
Like PLGIC’s “Service is Our Policy” philosophy, the recent relief operations provided everyone with the opportunity to show the true spirit of Christmas by demonstrating compassion and service to those who are in dire need. “We thank our employees for their generosity and immediate response and ask everyone to continue praying for the typhoon Sendong victims that they will be able to overcome the challenges brought about by this tragedy,” said George Tiu, President of PLGIC in his closing message for Operation Tulong.
